SAINT BERNARD CLUB of Tvl
Chairman’s Report 2018-2019
Another great year for our club, full of interesting events. Let’s look at some of the events that took place this past year:
This last year we held TWO meetings in the World Union of Saint Bernards (WUSB). This was because the WUSB 2018 ITALY was held later than usual in September in Bagnara di Romagna, Ravenna, due to the consensus that it would be too hot for the dogs in July. WUSB 2019 was held in Berdoff, Luxemburg. The judges for the 2019 WUSB were voted for at the delegate’s meeting and I was elected by a vote of delegates, to judge in France.
Locally we had a championship show in November 2018 and took part in the festival at the beginning of December2018, hosted by Fair Play at Goldfields Show Grounds.
Our club has hosted a breed seminar in July 2019 in conjunction with the JUDGES EDUCATION committee. I presented a seminar on Judging Saint Bernards.
Thank you to our club members and committee members for their sponsorships and support throughout the year. Without you all we would not be able to hold such successful events.
WUSB 2018 Bagnara di Romagna, Ravenna, Italy
The WUSB 2018 took place in Bagnara di Romagna, Ravenna, Italy at the lovely home of Giovanni and Dinorah Morsiani.
Our tour group consisted of three club members, who once again attended the WUSB conference, AGM, delegate meeting, Gala dinner and show.
We met in the city of Bologna. Mary Catherine Alexandra and Kevin and Cathy Young. This WUSB may be known as the great Italian adventure. Mary Catherine’s suitcase never made it to The WUSB but instead toured the many airports of Italy from Rome to Bologna……..
Once we had sorted Mary Catherine with a nifty black outfit to replace her lost luggage, we began our tour of Bologna. We started at the spectacular Piazza Maggiore, with its arched colonnades and ended at the Two leaning Towers, Asinelli and Garisenda.
After spending an amazing morning in the lovely city of Bologna, we then made our way to the Grand Hotel Mattei in Ravenna. Here the hotel was a buzz of Saint Bernard enthusiasts from all around the world. England, Spain, Germany, just to name a few.
The Judges and Delegates meetings took place at the Saint Museum /Conference room at the Morsiani Villa. The gardens were a buzz as the campers started to arrive to set up for the main event on Saturday.
The Gala Dinner was quite a festive occasion, it was held away from the show at the restaurant La Tana del Lupo.
An Auction was held with some antiquities donated by Giovanni himself!! The draw for the judges took place with great anticipation. The evening ended with the serving of the famous Tiramisu beautifully decorated with the WUSB logo.
The Italian club put on an amazing event. A big Thank you to the Italian club for all their effort. The tent and decorations were really good, with lots of interesting photos and information. We ended the Italian adventure with a tour through the streets of Ravenna. Mary Catherine meet up with her suitcase, as she was leaving beautiful Italy, at the airport!!!
SHOW REPORT From our Chairman and Judge Kevin Young
In 2018 the WUSB weekend consisted of the Meeting of the judges, the AGM, the meeting of the delegates representing their countries, a comprehensive breed seminar , the Gala Dinner and the WUSB show.
The gala dinner was a black tie affair, with a 5 course meal and superb wines. All delegates, officials and exhibitors attended and it was a very festive and social event and one that is the highlight of any WUSB show weekend.
In the show I judged Long coat males and then all Best In Shows. I had a super Champion class of 13 dogs. A large class is always a pleasure and an honour to judge, and tests the judge’s skills and knowledge. The full judge’s panel is listed below. Richter / Juges / Judges WUSB 2018 Italia:
Prof. Giovanni Morsiani (I) Convenor
Dr. Gianluigi Streparola (I) – Mr Didier Basset (F) – Mr Kevin Young (SA)- Mrs Uschi Eisner (A) – Mrs Rita Breesch (B) Mr Antonio Alenda (E) – Mr Milan Plundra (CZ) – Mr Max Russ (D2) –
The WUSB 2019 took place in Berdoff, Luxemburg. Berdorf is a commune and small town in eastern Luxembourg. The temperature for Saturday was around 32 degrees.
Our Club member Liliane Albrecht represented the Saint Bernard Club of Tvl in all the meetings including the Breed meeting.
She sent us a comprehensive report on all the meeting, so we were able to partake in the discussions.
Kevin Young was voted by the delegates to judge at the WUSB to be held in France in May 2020

Breed Seminar: On 14th July 2019
This year the JUDGES EDUCATION committee decided to do a different format for the breed seminars.
They hosted a SEMINAR WEEKEND.
Qualified Judges, Learner judges and breeders and Dog enthusiasts where able to attend a weekend of interesting seminars presented by different Judges.
Our Chairman Kevin Young presented the seminar on THE SAINT BERNARD DOG. Our club is always looking for a platform where we can educate judges and breeders about the breed standard, history, Function of the Modern Saint Bernard. We hope everyone enjoyed the Saint Bernard presentation and learned something valuable about judging Saint Bernard dogs. We were very pleased with the attendance and hope to be able to repeat the seminar next year.
Thank you to the organizers of the judge’s education council for their hard work in setting up the correct forum for the weekend of breed seminars.
It is with great sadness that I must announce the passing of Myra Southern, in March this year. Myra had been part of our Saint Bernard community for a long time. She was Chairman of the club from 1997 to 2003. She held the position of Vice President at the time of her passing and was also an Honorary life member. Myra has always made great effort to support our club with prizes and donations. She will be greatly missed at the annual show and AGM.
She always had the Saint in her heart and will be missed by Timothy her trusted companion (who is 9 years old)
It was a great honour!! To have our Chairman, Kevin Young, on the cover of the cover of the Spring edition of the Saint Bernard Club of America Magazine, “The Saint Fancier“
